Memorial Day Weekend

The Memorial Day weekend is the first and usually one of the busiest major holidays of the year for the Cleburne County Sheriff’s Office. This year proved to be no different. From Friday evening through Monday night thirty eight persons were booked into the Cleburne County Detention Facility on charges that ranged from Misdemeanor Warrants to Rape. As of Tuesday morning fourteen of the thirty eight are still in jail. In addition to issuing 19 citations for less serious violations, Deputies filed reports on thirty two of the numerous calls for service answered over the weekend.  Of the reports taken, three involved violent offenses. The suspects involved in the two Aggravated Assaults and one Rape reported were in custody within hours of the report being filed and those cases are being processed by Detectives. A significant number of those booked in, (9 of the 38), were arrested for drug related offenses. Four of those nine were charged with Felonies that include Possession of Meth and Simultaneous Possession of Drugs and Firearms.

Any weekend during the summer tourist season is a challenge for the Sheriff’s Office. The Corp of Engineers has 994 camp sites that were booked and in use all weekend. Traffic counters in Damsite Park show that over 9,500 vehicles were through that park alone this past weekend. While the Sheriff’s Office was extremely busy there were no drownings, and no fatality traffic or boating accidents. Overall it was a very good weekend.
